A little late, don't you think?

Apparently there is a ground swell in the newly cojonied Democratic Party for getting the heck out of Dodge:
"The U.S. cannot accomplish anything further in Iraq militarily. It is time to bring them home," said Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, the senior Democrat on the House of Representatives subcommittee that oversees military spending and one of his party's top spokesmen on defense.
At least it is happening. After all the deaths. After the destruction of the infrastructure. (actually, we destroyed it twice. Don't forget the first Gulf War.) After all the rhetoric. (Has a War ever been this screwed up by an Administration?)

We have destroyed a country and a large number of its people and I can't see that there is anything positive coming out of it. The current "elected" government is as corrupt as the previous "elected" government and, blue fingers aside, I don't think the social situation is conducive to true, electoral democracy. Particularly when the majority want a religious autocracy.

About $220 billion late.
May we live in interesting times.

Are you sure that the majority in the US really do want that?

A large minority want some version or flavour of it yes and are working flat out to get it. They've been working at it for more than 30 years particularly by very cleverly setting an establishment and an agenda using the famous "wedge issues" BUT the conditions were favourable one of the most favourable I think (argued this one a lot with dad who agrees with some reservations) was the artificial boom of "The South/southwest)that boom was built on artifically cheap energy how well they'll do now that that chicken is well and truly plucked and coming home to roost is another question.

Keep plugging the "corrupt republican" alternating with "incompetent republican" line all the time "corrupt republicans" every time you say "republican" drag "corrupt" and or "incompetent" in there somehow.

Personal news:

Little brother has (ordinary)'flu and is not happy he made the best description of misery I've every heard this morning "It's like having a toothache everywhere."
So as well as being "mummy" "the cleaning lady" and "homework helper" I'm now also "nurse" du.

The elections here went really well.
The right wing parties did not do well and the Christian Democrats having been destroyed in the parliament elections (no seats) have now also been destroyed in the regional ones.

My trip to Berlin with my girlfriend and little brother went really well. I won my boxing tournament (first ever knockout WOO HOO) and then on Saturday I took part in my first ever chess boxing match this is a really enjoyable sport and I won both the boxing and then the chess matches. There is a lot of interest in it here I think we might be able to get a club started.

I did very well in my exams so now if I do well in the next set in January and then again in summer I will be entitled to pick not only what regiment I go into but what speciality courses I do as well as the ordinary officer training courses.

and two pieces of best news we got an email from dad. He wrote mostly for my little brother to stop him from being so frightened and make him laugh a little. The bits that he wrote to me made me really homesick for Lebanon I loved it when we were posted there.

Finally the lady who was our housekeeper in Beirut has astonished her children and got married again. She was like a second mum to me and I'm really happy for her she was really patient and gentle when she taught me Arabic and writes to me a lot to keep me in practice and then sends my replies with corrections so I can see where I have made mistakes.

When our mum died she came over and looked after us for a few months while we got back on our feet. She is 68 he is 65 and she is making a lot of jokes about marrying a younger man. She has invited herself over for Christmas so I am preemptively cleaning the house A LOT.

good night.

How absolutely fascinating. Trying to piece together someones lives from the snippets of a personal communication. I am probably all wrong but surmise that MarkInIreland is posted to peace keeping in Lebanon. His son is in officer candidate school.

I visited Berlin three or four times starting in 1970. The East was grim. The Wall was everywhere. The moutain of rubble in the Grunerwald was impressive. How can you look at the Brandenburg Gate and not hear Bach in the air?

I do think the American people, if they think about it, which most don't, want out of Iraq. We will see.
